CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. People: Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore. Leader: From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is to be praised. People: The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. All: Let us worship God! *HYMN Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessed, most glorious, the ancient of days, Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love. To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small; In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish; But naught changeth Thee. Thou reignest in glory, Thou rulest in light, Thine angels adore Thee, All veiling their sight; All praise we would render; O help us to see, 'Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee, PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, you created us for life together. We confess that we have turned from your will. We have not loved one another as you commanded. We have been quick to claim our own rights, and have been careless of the rights of others. We have taken much and given little. Forgive our disobedience, O God, and strengthen us in love, so that we may serve you as a faithful people, and live together in your joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel, People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Draw us close, Holy Spirit, as the Scriptures are read and the Word is proclaimed. Let the word of faith be on our lips and in our hearts, and let all other words slip away. May there be one voice we hear today — the voice of truth and grace. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 105:1-6 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Matthew 20:1-16 SERMON I Don’t Like That Parable *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH From the Confession of 1967 God’s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of the human mind. Human thought ascribes to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But God reveals divine love in Jesus Christ by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinful men and women. The power of God’s love in Christ to transform the world discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of God’s love. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER and the LORD’S PRAYER *HYMN Amazing Grace Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come;’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my Shield and Portion be, as long as life endures. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun,We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d first begun. BENEDICTION POSTLUDE How Majestic Is Your Name Smith/Hayes
