PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of love, you have always given us what we need. You have taken care of us even when we could not care for ourselves. You have given us life and breath. Still, there are times we doubt you. There are times we seek to go our own way, rebelling against you, forgetting your goodness and grace. O God, we have hurt ourselves and others by trying to be so fiercely independent. Forgive our sin, our arrogance and our pride. Grant us courage enough to place our trust in you. We pray in Jesus’ name and for his sake. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel, People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 40:27-31 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Matthew 11:25-30 SERMON A Great Invitation AFFIRMATION OF FAITH From A Brief Statement of Faith We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER and the LORD’S PRAYER HYMN On Eagles’ Wings You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in his shadow for life, say to the Lord: "My refuge, my rock in whom I trust!"(chorus) And he will raise you up on eagle's wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand. The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear:under his wings your refuge, his faithfulness your shield. (chorus)You need not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day;though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come. (chorus)For to his angels he's given a command to guard you in all of your ways;upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. (chorus) BENEDICTION
