CALL TO WORSHIP HYMN The Church’s One Foundation The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord,She is His new creation by water and the Word. From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died. Elect from every nation, yet one over all the earth; Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food,And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. Though with a scornful wonder this world sees here oppressed,By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed,Yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, "How long?"And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,She waits the consummation of peace forevermore;'Til, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blessed,And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One,And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won.O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that weLike them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with Thee. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, you created us for life together. We confess that we have turned from your will. We have not loved one another as you commanded. We have been quick to claim our own rights, and have been careless of the rights of others. We have taken much and given little. Forgive our disobedience, O God, and strengthen us in love, so that we may serve you as a faithful people, and live together in your joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel, People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 100 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Matthew 10:32-39 SERMON What About All That Talk About Unity? AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER and the LORD’S PRAYER HYMN We Are One in the Spirit We are one in the Spirit, We are one in the LordWe are one in the Spirit, We are one in the LordAnd we pray that all unity may one day be restored.(chorus) And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love.Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in handWe will walk with each other, we will walk hand in handAnd together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land. (chorus) We will work with each other, we will work side by side We will work with each other, we will work side by side And we’ll guard each one’s dignity, and save each one’s pride. (chorus)All praise to the Father, from whom all things come. And all praise to Christ Jesus, His only sonAnd all praise to the Spirit ,who makes us one. (chorus) BENEDICTION
CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples. People: Sing to him, sing praises to him, tell of all his wonderful works. Leader: Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. People: Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually. All: Let us worship God! HYMN At the Name of Jesus At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now;'tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word. Humbled for a season, to receive a namefrom the lips of sinners, unto whom he came;faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious when from death he passed; Bore it up triumphant, with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height,to the throne of Godhead, to the Father's breast, filled it with the glory of that perfect rest. Christians, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father's glory o'er the earth to reign;for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now. PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of grace, you call into being things that are not, and change darkness into light. Yet we confess our resistance to the changes you would make in us. Break the control of old habits, old thought patterns, old doubts, stale religion, so that the invitation of new life in Jesus Christ may meet us at every turn. All things are new in your grace, and old things pass away. Break our bondage to familiar things that keep us back from the life of faith, and help us to grasp your new life, which we see and experience in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel, People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 72:1-7 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Matthew 11:1-6 SERMON Should We Look For Another? AFFIRMATION OF FAITH From the Confession of 1967 God’s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of the human mind. Human thought ascribes to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But God reveals divine love in Jesus Christ by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinful men and women. The power of God’s love in Christ to transform the world discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of God’s love. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER and the LORD’S PRAYER HYMN In the Cross of Christ I Glory In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o’er the wrecks of time; All the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime. When the woes of life o’ertake me, hopes deceive, and fears annoy,Never shall the cross forsake me, Lo! It glows with peace and joy. When the sun of bliss is beaming, light and love upon my way,From the cross the radiance streaming adds more luster to the day. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified;Peace is there that knows no measure, joys that through all time abide. BENEDICTION
